Service Monitor 1.0b1

June 29, 2005

Service Monitor is a utility that works with our PowerKey and Kick-off! products to ensure that internet services running on a computer keep working.

Service Monitor works by periodically querying the chosen services running on this computer, and verifying that they respond as desired. As long as they do, Service Monitor updates a "Rebound! Timer" in the PowerKey/Kick-off! software. If the service fails for any reason, Service Monitor stops updating the corresponding timer, and PowerKey/Kick-off! can take appropriate action to restart the computer.

The current version of Service Monitor can be found on our web site at

Note: This is a preview release, and may be incomplete and not fully compatible with all systems. We have done extensive in-house testing, but cannot guarantee that it will function in all situations. If you find a problem when using this software, please let us know! You can send emails to . We appreciate any input you may have.

System requirements

Service Monitor works on any Mac computer running Mac OS X 10.1 or higher. It must also have a PowerKey Pro 650 or Kick-off! unit connected, along with the corresponding software.

To use Service Monitor, your PowerKey or Kick-off! software must be configured to monitor application timers:

  1. Open the "Rebound!" (for PowerKey Pro) or "Kick-off!" application.
  2. Select the "Application Crashes" tab.
  3. Make sure the "Monitor application timers" box is checked.

Installing Service Monitor

Service Monitor can be opened simply by double-clicking on it, but it will only continue to work until the computer is restarted or the current user logs out. In most cases, you'll want to run it automatically when the computer starts up:

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences....

  2. Open the "Login Items" list:
  3. Drag the Service Monitor application into the list, or click the "+" (or "Add") button at the bottom of the list, and locate Service Monitor in the dialog box.

Using Service Monitor

To use Service Monitor, simply double-click on its icon. You can then create monitors to watch your services. An extensive help system is available by clicking the "?" icon in the window.
