When opening the control panel, I get a message saying "The PowerKey Extension did not load at startup."

    Rebound! uses the PowerKey background software for all of its functionality. Make sure this software is properly installed. See "The PowerKey background software" in the PowerKey Help for more information. If this software was moved, you can simply move it back to its original location. If it is missing, you can use the PowerKey installer to reinstall it. Doing this will not damage your preferences.

Rebound! doesn't restart my computer after the system crashes.

    Some crashes which appear to be system crashes are actually caused by applications. Though the system may appear unresponsive, other processes are still running normally. See How Rebound! works for more information.

Rebound! turns my computer off after a crash, but it doesn't restart it.

I removed my Rebound! software, but it still restarts after a crash.

    Removing the Rebound! control panel will not disable the crash detection features, as it is only used to change your settings. To disable Rebound! completely, you must also disable the PowerKey background software (see the PowerKey help for more information).

    Alternatively, you can uncheck both the "Monitor system for crashes" (in the "System Crashes" panel and the "Monitor application timers" (in the "Application Crashes" panel.

I disabled my PowerKey and Rebound! software, but my computer keeps restarting every few minutes.

    If the "Number of restart attempts" slider in the "Application Crashes" panel is set higher than '1', the PowerKey hardware will wait for the software to reestablish communication at startup. Since the software has been disabled, this won't occur, and the unit will restart the computer again.

    To avoid this problem, always set this slider to '1' before disabling the software.

Rebound! doesn't recover after an application crashes.

    Rebound! can only monitor applications which include support for our "application timer" technology. Contact your application's developer to see if they offer Rebound! support.

    Tip: Rebound! uses the same software as our Kick-off! product, so if your application supports Kick-off!'s application timers, it automatically supports Rebound! as well.

    If you are running an application which includes support for Rebound!'s application timers, make sure its timer is being set. Open the Rebound! control panel and click on the "Application Crashes" tab. The timer should be shown in the list at the bottom of the panel. If it does not appear, check your application's user manual to configure this support.

Rebound! restarts my computer when I run some applications or tasks.

    If the system gets hit with a heavy load (especially in Mac OS 9 and earlier), the PowerKey background software may not be able to communicate with the hardware for a period of time. The PowerKey unit interprets this as a crash. Increase the value of the "Restart if system doesn't respond" slider in the "System Crashes" panel.

    Some applications, including some disk utilities and games, will take control of the computer for very long times. If you need to run one of these programs, you should temporarily uncheck the "Monitor system for crashes" box in the "System Crashes" panel.

An error message appears at startup every time Rebound! restarts my computer, saying the computer was shut down improperly.

    This is a standard message that appears in Mac OS 9 and earlier after a crash occurs. You can disable this message in the General Controls control panel. Uncheck the box labelled "Warn me if computer was shut down improperly."

My log shows that Rebound! restarted due to a system crash immediately after startup.

    Rebound! can't add an entry to your log while the computer is crashed, so it adds one after it restarts the computer. Since the first message after a startup indicates that the background software is starting, the system crash message will be added afterward.

When an application crash occurs, sometimes another application puts up a dialog box that interferes with the restart.

    When Rebound! initiates a restart following an application failure, the system attempts to cleanly quit other applications first. If another application won't quit, this will interrupt the restart attempt, but Rebound! will perform a low-level restart a minute later. See How Rebound! works for more information.

    Tip: To automatically dismiss dialog boxes, the Mac OS 8.6-9.x version of Rebound! includes a utility called "Dialogger", which also records the dialog's message in monoLog. To install Dialogger, run the PowerKey installer and select "Dialogger" in the list.

PowerKey's status light stops blinking when my computer goes to sleep.

    Some models of Macintosh stop running applications when going to sleep. To avoid spurious restarts on these machines, the PowerKey software disables the system crash timer when the computer goes to sleep. The software will resume the timer when the computer wakes up.

    While PowerKey was designed not to interfere with sleep mode, it's often desirable for servers to stay awake at all times. To ensure your computer stays awake, open the Energy Saver control panel and set the sleep slider to "never".

    Tip: You can set the Energy Saver to put the display to sleep without affecting system performance.
